Accessibility and Inclusive Higher Education Practices at Sakarya University

Sakarya University adopts accessibility as an institutional priority in order to ensure the equal participation of individuals with special needs in higher education. In this context, the Barrier-Free Life and Support Coordinatorship provides various support mechanisms to enable students with special needs to participate fully and effectively in academic, social, and cultural life. An inclusive higher education environment is promoted through individualized academic accommodations, psychosocial counseling services, scholarship opportunities, part-time employment possibilities, and an accessible campus infrastructure.

Across the campus, all physical and digital structures—from information systems to social spaces—are organized in accordance with accessibility principles. In addition, accessible teaching guidelines are prepared for academic staff, and support is provided to convert course materials into accessible formats.

In the 2025–2026 academic year, a total of 95 students with special needs are enrolled at the university, including 61 in formal education programs and 34 in distance education programs.

Through these efforts, Sakarya University has been recognized within the scope of the Barrier-Free University Awards organized by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK), receiving various accessibility flags and program badges. The university has also been awarded the “Accessible Informatics Education Award” by the Turkey Accessible Informatics Platform for its work in accessible digital content production and user-friendly information systems.
